Here we go again!!!; Raising Gold Stripe Maroons

Well these are the babies that we waited forever to start laying. They finally did this spring. This pair is over ten years old, and I'm sure it was my fault and not theirs. Recently we went out of town, and the tank they live in got to 95 degrees... all lived except for the poor males sperm. So now we had this female still laying eggs, but they werent being fertilized. even though I saw him actually go through the motions of doing it. Three months later we are getting viable batches again, and this time our largest yet!!!! This bad boy covered most of the tile. We unfortunetely missed the first night of the hatch and missed some. I'm pretty sure the rest are going tonight. and thanks to adam we have a free CPR fry catcher to try out. We had been taking the tile out and getting a limited success on hatch rate. I'm hoping that this will help getting more viable fry out of the hatch... so here we go. What better way to start than with pictures!!!!!!

Wow, it looks like a ton of eggs are still left. Good luck!

Your new puppy is adorable. How did his ears turn out?

Well it's 2:30 am and I already have a review for this fry catcher. Its amazing at catching fry... i had hundreds in there last night before I went to bed at 11pm... at 2:30.. the rest of my fry had all been hatched, and I went and looked to find only ONE fry in the catcher. Apparently it is not very good at keeping them from coming out. Is this common in fry catchers as I was under the impression they could get in but not out. So this whole batch is gone :( i looked all over the tank and didnt see any :( I am super bummed. I guess there will be more eggs next week, and this time i'll remove them to the larval tank as they are caught.

and the pups ears turned out great as far as I can tell. she however hates that cone. It cramps her style

They hatch night five and six... than they lay on day nine. So every nine days. Eggs will be back here soon enough. I'm just bummed b/c this is the largest batch they have had yet. it was super huge. they probably thought they were going to die when all our other fish died so laid lots of eggs

Shoot! I can't believe that. What do you bet that they never tested the thing with anything that could actually swim. They probably just set it in the water and watched particles flow into it.

I've got a question about it. When I first saw it, I was a little concerned about the clear chamber on the top - it was so small and had such a big opening. Do the larvae ONLY stay in that chamber? or do they get moved into the larger empty chamber below? If they only stay in the clear chamber, then it's just a poor design. If they move into the larger chamber, then I think it might work if your pump was turned on a little bit stronger - then they wouldn't be able to swim against the current.

Other trap designs usually bring the larvae down into a chamber that they can't swim back through to get out because of the constant forward current pushing on them.

Don't worry, there's no way that the maroons laid that big of a clutch just because of the power outage. The female would have had that many eggs developing for a week before the outage ever happened. However, they may be traumatized by the whole power outage thing and may not lay on schedule for a while. Hopefully that won't happen.

The pump can be turned up, but these babies are so tiny and not very good swimmers at all. The clear chamber is really tiny. They swim towards the light and than kind of tumble around that curved part into the large black holding box. There is a really fine mesh that is between the chamber and the pump in ANOTHER small chamber. It worked really great at catching them. They swam right up and I saw them swoop in, but apparently they got out later in the night? Couldnt find bodies anywhere.

I'm glad that they are brought into the larger chamber, that means that something went wrong with the trap - not necessarily the design. So they either swam back out or went through the mesh and went out via the pump - which wouldn't have been pretty.

Since you signed up to test this thing, you should figured out how they got out. I would set it up and put some baby brineshrimp in there and figure out how they can get out. Maybe check the mesh and see if there are any openings around the edges. It wouldn't take much for them to be pulled through over the course of 4-6 hours.

I read through the instructions you have...did it really not finish the final sentence on the first page? Or did I not copy one of the pages?

One more thing, you can still use the trap even if it doesn't hold them through the night. Just let it catch them and then move the larvae to their nursery tank after they are caught. Most people don't even use a trap, they catch them by hand with a flash light.

The maroons laid this afternoon right on schedule. Slightly bigger batch than last time. I'll snap a picture tomorrow. I'm planning on just moving them to their larval tank as they are caught this time. I'll work this week with some brine shrimp maybe and see if i can notice anything. It's possible maybe the mesh moved and they escaped. I'm honestly not sure. When They had first started getting caught they were all just kinda hanging out in the chamber. Maybe when Kyle messed with it he moved the mesh. We did have an issue at first with them getting into the pump chamber because when Kyle set it up earlier it was under water at the back. Men. Lol. We'll be collecting fry again here in five days. I need to get my brine shrimp hatcher ordered from BSD. That thing is like magic.
