Advanced Topic! Using No3 to reduce PO4

Me, too. I have fish in my main display I feed the algae to, so I am not removing it from my system, just recycling it....

You have so many bugs growing everywhere, it wouldn't matter if you lost a few, but you could shake the algae out before you remove it. Or, put it on a peice of needlepoint mesh, and let the bugs crawl on to it, then put the mesh in your tank.

Super Yummy!

Lost a few bugs? That hurts to hear you say that. I'm convinced that those guys are the liveblood of the system. It think the needlepoint is a good idea. I have an amphipod thank that is doing really well right now. I wish I could figure out how to get some out of there when I needed, say, 20-30 of them for a tank.

Do what you must for the sake of the bugs, but you have to throw living matter away to get rid of the PO4. Like I said before I thought xenia worked great when I had room for it. No bugs in that. When I throw my algae away now, I shake it a few times and hold it above the water for a minute to let the critters bail back into the water but I'm sure a few get sent to their maker without ceremony. :(

What?! No ceremony? I hate throwing bugs away, especially after I've named them.

How often should I be harvesting my algae? I'm sure I don't do it enough.

I think that depends on the species. I would harvest any caulerpas maybe weekly (?) because they can grow so fast, and take out tons of NO3/PO4. But, the slower growing Chaeto ( what's the point, I say?) can grow till it's fills it's space.....

Did I give you any of the red tang Candy? That you can grow till it fits it's space.
