How to get and maintain a pure rotifer culture; Is it possible?

Ok, I will try them again. When I have to! Right now, the fry I have (and the fry I hope to have soon) can eat bbs at birth. As far as my research goes, enriched bbs is as good at delivering phyto (the actual nutrition! I love phyto!) as rots, plus I can grow the BBS bigger. But, I do hope to get a few more species of fry that will need rots.

But, I know how important it is to get cultures in different hobbyists hands. We've all had issues that have caused a culture to crash. So, I do not want to be a chump and not do my part! But, until I get more room in my fish room (I am going to start my new bathroom soon), it makes it a bit problematic.

So, if we know Amie will be able to keep them, and Larry too, would I be too sissy to not have them for a few months? I swear, I will do my part to have strong cultures of every thing we can think of to grow in our state soon!

Suzy, you are definitely doing more than your part and you don't have to grow rotifers if you don't want to. Besides, I have enough for everyone. It's amazing that just a month ago I couldn't find any rotifers in any of my containers. Now I have so many that it's rediculous. But, 2 of my clowns are breeding, so it's a good thing. I would love to get away from rotifers if there was a good substitute. If I can get a tank setup before putting clown larvae in, and get copepods reproducing on the glass, that seems to help out a lot in their growth. (As Crystal reconfirmed.) I'm getting new babies on Monday, I think I'll set up a tank today and see if I can get some babies in there by Monday. I'd love to try raising them completely on pods and never feed them rotifers or brine shrimp, but I don't have the nerve to do that yet.

I think they would be incredibly strong fish if they do eat pods from day 1.

But, I might need rots one day, so don't let them go. (How selfish is that? I just asked you to do the work for me!)

Really, if you one day decide you don't need them, let me know and I will take over rotifer duty. I know we will need them to do gobies, dragonettes and the like.and baby angelfish and butterflies and lionfish......

I would love to not have to hatch BBS. Just an extra thing to do. All of the clowns got through meta before I ever had any BBS hatched. LUCKY! I tried the cyclopeze as amie suggested. They seemed interested, but it still seemed to large for their little mouths. They would try to eat it and spit it back out a few times before finally getting some. I'm going to keep them on BBS for the next few days and try cyclopeze again. My last batch i raised never did cyclopeeze they went straight to pulverized flake. Which was nice, but I feed prime reef so the water turned pink quickly!

Suzy, here's a good post for you to read about the value of raising rotifers and pods together. :D

Crystal, you still ought to feed the cyclop-eeze to them as soon as they can eat it. Or even try to crush it up a little for them. It has astaxanthene in it, which is very important for their growth and color.

I only have frozen too. Never tried the freeze-dried. Oh...that reminds me. I can get cyclop-eeze for a really good price if I buy it in bulk. It ends up coming to about $30 for 2 pounds - whichs lasts a long time. But I have to find 8 people willing to buy 2 pounds of it. Anyone interested? I did it once before and now it's hard to go back to buying those small cubes for 8 bucks.

I agree. When you are ready to buy let me know. I still have about a half of pound left. I bought some a while back and it cost me a lot more than that for about a pound.
