I wub my Nudibranch!

Guys, I really do! Amie has given me a bunch of bergia nudibranchs, to eat aiptasias I have in my overflows. I put a lot of them in there, but I never see them. The aiptasia population was decreasing but now it seems to have stabilized. I am not sure if they are still in the overflow or if they have traveled out into my reef. I kinda feel bad about them, cause I don't know if they are ok or not....

But, I have one in a tiny nano who I watch and see every day, and I show him off to everyone who comes to my house. He is freakin' cool! His (her?) name is Morley, and he gets to have the entire nano to himself! I am glad I have aiptasias left in my overflows for him, 'cause he is now a beloved pet!

Does anyone know the lifespan of these cool teeny tiny things? Help me keep him healthy?

Amie told me if he gets white, he is hungry. Can I assume if he is grayish, he is not?

mine turn very dark brown like an aptasia when they are healthy and full. grey is probably a sign he is getting hungry. As far as i know they live 5-6 months? though I could be wrong. I've got 75+ of them from one egg strand. Havent lost one yet. I did however sell a few to the vegas people because I am going through 10 aptasia a day feeding the boogers!!!! I love my guys watching them munch aptasia and swim upside down in their cups.

Only months? Dang! I am really attached to Morley. He is funky!

I am trying to be sure he always has a snack available, in case he wakes up in the night and is hungry!

Suzy, you crack me up. Who names their nudibranchs?! I've heard that they only live about 6 months, but I don't know if that's true or not. I guess we will see. I still have my original ones that I got on May 10th, and they would have been 2 months old at the time I got them. That makes them 7 months, so they should be ready to kick the bucket anyday. I'll let you know.

Yours were probably born between June 1 - June 15, if that helps to keep track of their age.

As far as color goes, pure white indicates starvation. Grey means they are eating well. Crystal, your pictures show that you are feeling them really well. You can probably back off a bit if you need to. Those spikes are called ceratas, and they are part of their digestive system. So you can kind of think of them as their stomach. If just the tips of them are colored, then they have eaten a little. If the entire cerata is colored, then they are full. If they are empty, they are starved. Kind of cool, huh? If they eat a different color of aiptasia (dark vs. light), the ceratas will reflect the color of the aiptasia eaten. It's really a poor design though because if they are in danger or feel threathened, they drop their ceratas. And if they drop too many, they will starve. That's why it's so important to handle them carefully.

Sylvio
Hi

Berghias leben zwische 2-4 Jahren .

Werden sie in sehr warmen Becken gehalten so verkürzt sich die Zeit.

Oder finden sie keine Glasrosen mehr, verhungern sie.

So hat es mir mal ein anderer deutsche Züchter erklärt.

Of course I named him! He is really cool! But, the rest of his buddies are no where to be found.

Sylvio says they live 2-4 years! I think! If I keep them cool...

2-4 years? Wow, that would be awesome. I've never heard that before.

Sylvio, btw, is the one that got me into this berghia mess in the first place. (Just kidding, Sylvio) He's the one that told me about them and taught me how to raise them and talked me into it. I've got containers all over my basement full of berghias, and I collect 20 new egg strands every day. I guess you can decide if it's a mess or not.

all of my berghia are now large enough to count. I got over 100 out of that one egg strand. Closer to 105. I got sick of counting. i'd say about 1/4 of them are reaching a half inch, half are 1/4 inch, and the remaining are in a dedicated cup because they are under 1/4 inch. amazing little guys. Good thing I have a large aptasia problem./ I've been ripping off tentacles and heads. We'll see how quickly they grow back that way. I'll probably start a small 10 gallon and cultivate them if i can find a rock that has enough on them. Most of them are in my reef.
