MfG Sylvio |

While we wait for Tinas translation to hear Sylvio's experience, here is mine! I do not know persay that your culture is contaminated. I just know that Velvet Greens version has not been nannoclorosis (which it used to be) for a long time. I probably should not use the word contaminated. That sounds way bad! But, an alga culture starts out as a certain species, but then other species can take over. Have you ever seen a tank or a pond or a puddle of water where the water looks green? It is because spores come from out of the air or on a birds foot or from a coral we add, and a different species of algae can take over the body of water. Just like macroalgae compete with hair algae. The stronger faster growing species gets the nutrients and eventually takes over. So, I am just guessing that the species that you have could be a less nutritious algae. We could check it out under a microscope to see if it is good and worth growing. I am not a fan of alga plates/disks, but they are a good way to get a pure culture. FloridaAquafarms had some clean ones last time I ordered, a few years back. My last order was for liquid cultures from Algagen. I like them a bit better. They have more of my favorite spp. Is Shultz a FW fetilizer? I haven't used it or heard of it. Is that what the bottle says to use? |

| I would deffinatly like to try a more nutritional species. Im here to learn :D One thing that isnt mentioned on Melves reef thread is that I microwaved tapwater for 5 minutes let it cool to room temperature added 5ml of fertilizer 1ml of essentials. How much light do you use for your cultures?? Im just using a little 6" 4watt florescent and have noticed a diffrence in color already and its been just over 12 hours. |

I use a cheap shop light. I don't microwave. I use tap water. Amie, are you around? What is the name for the alga that gets into our cultures and is such a pretty color? It is on the tip of my tongue.....I want to say endorphic, but that is not it.....Where is BananaAdam when I need him! |
