I received some Cerith snails in the mail today. They are different than what I have always called cerith snails. I have always thought ceriths were dark gray or even charcoal colored. What I call ceriths leave a ribbon egg pattern like the one seen in the picture on the top scroll of this board. Mine look like this. Posted Image I was acclimating them in a separate container, when I came back to them I had a cloud of larvae. No egg ribbon. Here is a picture of them. As you can see they have moved toward the light. You can also see they have been given green water. Posted Image Here is a picture of them blown up. There are two different morphs. One is round with a tail one is a small skinny black streak. They are both directionally motile. Posted Image So the questions. First can someone please straighten out my snail identification for me. Second anybody know what I ought to do to bring these little guys through. I assume phyto what else? Edited by Clint, Jan 13 2009, 05:12:03 PM.

Wow, that's fantastic. I love the picture. I'm with you, I thought they were grey as well. But I did some very quick research and found out that there are 3 different types of cerith snails ... who knew?! Anyway, you really should go to this site and post your pictures there and get some input from the experts. http://www.reefstewardshipfoundation.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=93 |

How incredibly cool! I would think phyto would be their food source. If you have live, that would be your best bet, along with a paste of some highly nutritious algae. Please keep us updated? I would love to have a source of CB janitors. |

I found these snails in one of my tanks a few weeks ago. I was pretty excited. Posted Image I'm not talking about the cerith snails. Here's a zoomed up picture of one of them. Posted Image Cool, huh? There are 4 of them. |

| Very cool. I want to figure out how to get a thousand. The place you sent me for ID said I should not use paste because the larvae wouldn't take it well and it would raise the ammonia too fast. Unfortunately I did not get that post until it was too late I think most of mine a gone. But I bet I could induce another spawn soon. I have several fish projects I need to do, but they will have to wait until after Thursday, I have a nasty test closing in fast. |

| That's too bad. Yeah, you do have to be careful with the paste. If it's fresh, you can use a little bit of it and it will actually start growing, so the ammonia level will be taken care of by the live cells. |

| So I have more of these larvae. This is weird after the last time I decided that these were not spawned live because later I saw egg ribbons but I ordered some more this week and I looked to see if there was larvae in the shipping water..nope then I added some water to acclimate them and sure enough I have hundreds of larvae again. Unfortunately I let my phyto culture go the way of all the earth because I have not realy had a need for it, too bad I would like to see if they settle. I have them in a ten gallon tank about 1/3 of the way full with air running and a heater. If anybody has some live phyto... I could use some asap. I wonder if they can spawn asexual live larvae under extreme stress and sexual egg ribbons under normal conditions. |

| Dang I must have checked the thread right before you posted last night Suzy. Anyway I gave them a little bit of freshly thawed paste last night before bed and this morning all gone. Next time I will have some live phyto on hand. |
