Pods 101 for dummies?; goby food

So I am kind of new to this growing pods thing. I bought some tiger pods because I want to get a mandrain goby. Put them in my refug. They sure are small. I think a goby could eat all 4000 of em in a day? Do they get bigger, or could someone please explain the difference between a copod and an amphipod.

A copepod, the species we have available to use, is much smaller than the available amphopods we have. Very, very good for feeding small fry because they are very high in nutrition. I would say a copepod, is about the size of a pencil tip, while a amphopod is about the size of an earwig!

Your goby and all your other fish will eat the copepods as soon as they reach the main display, and there are possibly predators in your refugium. Do you have room to set up a separate culture? It can be anything from as small as a mason jar to a 5 gallon bucket. Very easy to culture millions.

Don't buy them, though. We have lots of people growing them!

I hav 2 types of pods that I see in my tank & refugium... the larger ones look like the creature in the far right photo in the UBT banner and are aound 1/4" or less in length... I am guessing they are amphipods?

The other type are alot smaller, look almost like tiny shrimp or lobsters in shape, and can move rather fast considering their tiny size...sometimes they almost seem to run "in circles" and these I usually see either in the darker areas of my sump / fuge, or sometimes around the base of live rock pieces that contact the sandbed in my display - and usually at night... I am guessing these would be copepods?

The pods i got from the lfs are tiger pods. The bottle was 6 oz. It says there are up to 4000 of them in there. If you took a no. 2 pencil and sharpened it as sharp as humanly possible and the touched the tip on a piece of paper, the dot is about the size of these pods. They swim in an up and down darting motion. I'm pretty sure i need some bigger ones. My sister called me today and said what are you doing? I said looking at 4000 little bugs with a magnifying glass. She said "youve definatly lost touch." I think she's right!

Those pods grow wonderfully in a mason jar, or a bucket. Just put them in, add enough nanno phyto paste to keep the water a tiny bit green, and you can harvest 4000 every day!

Growing other stuff in your refugium is easy. Just get a start from someone and start feeding them. Harvest them with a piece of shrimp wrapped in bridal veil, leave in the regium overnight, the next day, shake into the tank.

Amie set me up with copepods, some phytopaste, and even gave me some free brine shrimp. Thanks amie! I want to dump the shrimp into my tank but im just too fascinated by them and think i will just keep em in the jar where i can look at them for afew more days.

Put a small airline in with them, and feed them a tiny bit of the paste, and they spawn live naupuli! I keep them in a small 2 gallon tank, and take a cup of water out daily when I harvest them. Then, when I do a water change on my tank, I use a bit to fill the culture of brine shrimp. I have a continuous supply for my baby seahorse!

Okay its a done deal. How much air and do i need to use an airstone? Right now its just bubbling away without one. If someone would have told me a month ago that I would be growing little bugs and brine in my house, I would have fallen over laughing.
