I am soooo pumped! The last time I ordered seahorses, a year or more ago, the supplier put in a couple of the coolest pipefish. I really didn't expect them and didn't know what to do with them, so I put one in my seahorse display tank and one in my reef. I rarely saw them. In the seahorse tank, they blended in so well with the macroalgae that I could be looking right at him and not see him. They lived for a while eating the pods and stuff, but they are gone now. But, one day in the reef tank, I was looking at the substrat and saw a teeny, tiny pipefish! It was so cool! I tried to suck it up with a piece of tubing but of course, I didn't suck enough water and the little puff of detritus that blew up hid him. I looked forever but never saw him again. But, that made me think I wanted to try to raise them, "try" being the key word. So, I ordered some to be overnighted to arrive today. They got incorrectly rerouted to Pennsylvania! Last time I ordered from Florida, they got snowed into on the tarmac! My luck is not so great ordering from Florida..... Fingers crossed they come today.... |

| Dang, they came and do not look good. The few seahorses I ordered came very compromised. One of the pipes is not able to swim to the bottom of the tank, a swim bladder issue? I really hope he doesn't need a pouch flushing... |

| I'm sorry, that stinks. 2-day shipping is never good. I hope they recover. |

Thanks, guys. The one upset pipe is now swimming normally. I tried some frozen food, one of them snicked it! About half the others ate some live shrimps. Good sign! |

| I really hope they can pull through, and as John said if anyone can help them I'm sure you and your googolplex of pods can help them. Good luck |

Thanks, guys! You are so supportive! I put these fish all together in a 20 high, and they all seem really active and going after the live shrimp. A couple are trying frozen so I think it may be a matter of time until they all are. At that point, I can put a few in the main display to show off. They are really funky, swimming and hitching upright. |

| Are you soaking the live food in super selco? That might help boost them up a little bit. |

They are starting to eat frozen mysis, so I have not been soaking it.When I started teaching them to eat frozen I used the brine shrimp that is already enriched. These fish look super healthy. I am starting to be able to tell them apart but I can't make out pouches yet. Not as clear as in seahorses. |

Ok, I am getting really excited about these fish! They are really active, eating and chasing anything that moves in their tank. I still have them in a species tank, so these are not the best photos of them. And, I think they are a fish for the truly obsessed (or weird? Nerdy? I dunno) with marine fish. I completely admit they are not the most colorful fish in the marine aquarium hobby, but they get extra credit for unusual. Plus, I love the markings of syngnathids. No two are alike, not like your yellow tang, raccoon butterfly or percula clown. Each is unique and totally funky! This photo shows a female ( I think) that is resting on a rock. These fish usually swim horizontally in the water column, not like a slithering eel or stinkin' snake. I think her markings are sweet and very sexy to the other fish. I really hope her tank mates are not too jealous.... Posted Image |
