Online breeding course offered online in January; For serious breeders, please read

I just found out about a course that will be offered at the first of the year if they can get enough people (6-10) to sign up for it. The cost is $150, plus someone mentioned a book, but I don't think it's a requirement.

Dr. Shimek is offering an online course on Invertebrate Embryology and Larval Biology for Reef Aquarist starting in either January or February of next year.

This course could be very valuable to anyone interested in raising larvae in the future, especially invertebrates. Some of the information will apply to fish larvae as well, but the course will focus on inverts. Dr. Shimek said he would be willing to provide advice on student breeding projects during the class. So if you are thinking about taking the class, you should make sure you have broodstock that is producing eggs in Jan/Feb so you can ask questions of Dr. Shimek during the class.

Crustacean (Decapod) development will be part of the course, but only a small portion, so if you are expecting a course dedicated to shrimp and crabs that would be disappointing. But if you are expecting a course with a good background on larval development and how it applies to captivity and aquariums, what general techniques can be used to help improve chances for success, etc, then you'll be happy with the course.

This course is not for beginner's or the light-at-heart. I have attached a copy of the last class he offered in 2007, and it looks pretty intense. He hasn't made up a course outline for this one yet, but he said that he will try to modify it to meet the needs of the class participants. He has indicated that he will be spawning corals during the class ... which is awesome!

This sounds like and awesome class, but unfortunately (or I should say hopefully) I will probably just be setting up my tank in Jan/Feb so that counts me out.

Hi

So ein Kurs muss wirklich interessant sein.

Gerade was die Impulse sind Paare zum laichen zu bewegen.

Aber auch Schlüsselreize bei der Meta sind von grosser Bedeutung
wo wir alle noch lernen müssen.

Hi

Such a course must be in fact interesting.

Just what the impulses are pairs to the spawn move.

But also key charms with|in the case of the Meta are of great importance|meaning
where we all must still learn.

Suzy, nothing is over your blonde head, you are smarter than most, haven't you figured that out yet?

I will request a syllabus and see where that gets me.

Let me see if I can sort Sylvio's post out a little:

This class sounds interesting. Learning what stimulates pairs to spawn. But most importantly, we all could learn more about the key to stimulating metamorphosis (or settlement cues, in the case of invertebrates).

I would like this class, do you know what the time requirements might be? I could be pretty busy at that point in the year.

The class has finally been posted and hours are listed. If you are interested, the cost is $150 and it is due by January 10th. Here's a link that describes the course work.
