Why grow Phytoplankton?

Because we can!

I grow it because it does such a good job of consuming nitrates, and any nitrogen compounds like ammonia or nitrite, ect. If I add a bit to anything that might produce ammonia, I know there will be no issue. For example, I have been growing brine shrimp forever! It is easy to have continuous food for my fish using a little bit of live phyto in the bottle. I feed them paste so I can gut load them with different species, but the live alga keeps their bottle filtered and healthy without any waste.

Plus, my reef tank is teaming with tons of tiny creatures, that spawn like crazy and feed my corals. I add a bit of live algae to keep those creatures alive and reproducing.

Be careful when buying "live" algae products at the local fish stores. These products were once live, but are now completely dead. In fact, some of the products are just watered down algae paste!

Live food adds to a reef tank, while dead food detracts. Live microalgae will absorb excess nutrients, dead algae IS excess nutrients.

I have a super strong live microalgae right now. It is just nannoclorosis, which is high in one of the essential fatty acids. Does anyone want to try it? I have fertilizer too.

Suzy I need to restart my phyto. I also need to run down a measuring device so I can measure 200mg and make the phyto plates discussed earlier in the year. I have the stuff I just need a way to measure.

Sweet!

I have a measurer of sorts, that you hang in the water to measure the concentration. Would that help?

Let me know when you want to restart or if I can just get you enough to do it. If you can, you will be my phyto super hero forever! I would plate every spp if I knew how!

Clint, That would be awesome if you started making plates. I'm going to be getting some phyto-starts in a few weeks, I'd love to be able to get plates of them eventually.

Clint, is this something you can teach me to do?If I could get empty plates, can I just innoculate them with some live growing species, then let them grow, like when the lab cultures mold and stuff?

Clint, use more agar then suggested! I made a bunch of these plates years ago and they weren't very solid, though I did have terrific success with them. I just recently started a culture of nano from a florida aquafarms plate that I purchased more than a year ago. Previous to that I would continually re-innoc plates by adding a few mls of sw and f/2. I believe I was able to get three rounds of inocculating (3-4 months between each).

I have a question about a plate I bought a while ago....where do I store it? In the refrigerator? Does it need to stay cold? That's where I've had it, have I killed it? I haven't tried to start any phyto from it yet, really not sure what to do to get it started.
