Todays Reefer!

Clint, I'm like you, I don't care if anyone sees my tank or not, I just love the hobby. Besides, if people figure out how into the hobby I really am, they just think I'm crazy, so why go down that road?!

Suzy, trust me, not everyone loves me. I think there may even be a 'Hate Amie Club' forming, even as we speak.

I love the Scientific Phase, that's definitely my favorite and why I stay in the hobby. There's always something new to figure out, test or learn. It's certainly not a stagnant hobby, things keep changing and improving all the time.

This phase is the best, I agree. But, I wonder if I need to add one more?

The Multiple Personality Aquarist

This is more me than the others. A combo of all the others! I wonder if I need to be medicated for it, or just treated by a fish obsessed aquarist? (over lunch!)

But, that brings one more to mind:

The Social Butterfly Aquarist
This is me quite often: Using my hobby to connect with others! I have met so many cool, fun people in my life through this hobby. I can walk into any fish store in our valley and be greeted with "Hi, Suzy! How's your tank?" and I know the owner, the staff and some of the customers. Plus, the true hobbyists I talk with daily here. And, by email, I talk with others who are lifetime hobbyists and curators. I go on field trips to talk to Linda from Seabase, and the Tims from BSD, and meet others for dinner on vacations. So many people I wouldn't have known if not for this hobby.

I find the social aspect really amazing. Who knew that you could be friends with people all around the world just because of fish.

The Social Butterfly Reefer must be why a lot of people stay in the hobby. At least the ones that don't even have tanks. I'm always amazed at how many people there are in the Utah Club that don't even have tanks, and haven't had one for years. I've always wondered what the attraction was or why they would continue to be active. Do you think it's the social aspect?

No, I don't think they quite fit that phase. I want to put them in one more:

The Ego Driven Aquarist

This person I hope not to be, and purposefully try not to be. Will you guys tell me when I am being ego driven? I see this type as a person who gets something in his/her psyche by not having a tank better than others (status) but by having his/her skill or knowledge of the hobby elevate them to a self perceived upper level. We have all read these posts on other websites (reef central, RDO, fish geeks, local sites) where the poster will state his opinion, have some one else state an alternate view, and the original poster will come up with reasons why his opinion carries more weight. Not as in scientific evidence or researched data, but just because he knows more than others!

This is the person who reminds me of a person who was not super popular in school, but wanted to be. Now as an adult, he/she runs with the cool jocks and cheerleaders!

This ties into another thought:

The Know It All Aquarist

This person really does know everything, just ask him! I hope I never come off this way. I always try to add IME when I am just relating my experience. But, we all know having an experience is much different than actually doing scientific research. And, in this world of so many people going to college to get Marine Biology degrees, we do get a lot of real scientific research. Eric Borneman, Todd Gardner ect all have have researched thesis' they did for college, where they spent months researching and doing controlled studies to prove or disprove an idea. I consider these studies real info. But, these research papers are hard to read, long and detailed. So, we get a lot of info by tiny posts on Reef Central, where some guy tells us to buy some new idea. Others read these short non researched posts and then feel they know it all!

Excellent, now you are getting into the good stuff. I realized after your open house yesterday that I sure came across as a know-it-all when I was talking to a gentleman that asked some questions about how to deal with his tank. To be perfectly honest, I had no idea what the cause of his coral issue was, but my solution may have come across as a know-it-all solution, and I felt uneasy about that.

I told him to do a 25-50% water change and watch to see if his corals perked up. Another person in the conversation suggested he get some tests kits, and that certainly is valid. With my method, he will never know what the main problem is. So, if anyone in that conversation is reading this, I apologize for coming across too strong. I don't want to be a Know-It-All and you guys can tell me to shut up if I come across that way.

One thing that has kept my interest in this hobby is that there is so much to learn. I'm always amazed and fascinated by the complexity of it all.

I don't think you are in that phase, Amie. I look at the Know-it-all as one who tells others there ways are wrong, not one who offers suggestions to fix issues. You do not offer advice AND criticism at the same time!

I love bouncing ideas off you and others. It is how we grow.

Besides, you are almost an Invertebrate Embryologist, so you almost do know everything! Who else do we know who is mentioned in a published book?

Thanks, but promise to smack me around if I'm any different. I can't stand to be a part of certain organizations because of the numbers of know-it-alls that exist in the groups. It's so much easier to learn from people that work with you, than from people that talk down to you.

Wow...now you got me started! I have known you two for a few years now. I know I have come and gone...from the sites but never from the hobby and the knowledge I have gained from them. I worked my way thru college in a pet store selling fish and puppies. That was a long long time ago.

Sometimes we just feel like the old tank syndrome.

Just when we say it's just not the same...we begin again. You know the feeling we all get it. Old reefers really never go away...we just look for another challange.
Great minds think alike..lets look to the past. Suzy you said it right...all the gadgets all the new trends...they come and they go. I remember seeing my first pod..Susy you were the Queen of phyto...got my first start from you. Amie, I remember you comming by to get some phyto to start your own. Boy, did you pass my by in the breeding and research dept. (you go girl)
Recently I went thru a rough time (resession) I painfully took down my breeding tanks and consolidated to my old trusty 46 gal. bowfront. A no frills tank...softies...shrooms and my 2 pair of royal grammas. I remembered Mark Peterson and his theory of replacing his sandbed a bit at a time. Usually giving live sand to newbees like me and others new to the hobby.

Wow...my old tank syndrome was being reborn before my eyes. Water changes...I'm bad...were also neglected...it was like signing the old 46 a death warrant. So like a fresh paint job I re arranged my rocks added some live plants...presto!

I know sit for hours looking at my old 46 and am amazed. I find myself breaking out my magnifying glass like the old days in awe! If I spot a bug or a sponge that I never knew was in there I get excited
. Have you really ever looked in the eyes of a pulsing xenia! I use to give it away by the bucket. Such a cheap and simple coral....waving all the time.. what beauty.
Mushrooms that open and close...showing there spots, stripes and their vast kalidescope of colors. Keep it simple...gadgets and glitter and high priced coral get us started in the hobby. Simple beauty keeps our attention...possibly for our lifetime.

I would like to thank all my good friends that I have met in this wonderful hobby and to those who I have yet to meet.

After 40 years with my hands getting wet it still feels good.
