I just have to say that I really hate frag plugs. I can see why they were invented, so the person fragging could set the plug down in something like an eggcrete and it would hold the plug. But once the plug goes into a regular reef aquarium, it's completely worthless, IMO. I have about 5 different corals that I've bought over the past year or so that are on frag plugs and I have been struggling with all of them ever since I bought them. They don't stay where you put them and I'm always digging them out of the sand or from behind rocks. I've finally decided that I've had enough, I'm cutting the 'foot' off of all of the plugs. Then maybe I'll be able to glue the remaining disc to a rock or something. Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me? |

| I do. I wish I could get frags just on a piece of rubble. I usually can find a place where the rubble fits tight but the plug is difficult in an established reef. If you can fit in another piece of rock, or remove one, it is pretty easy to drill a hole in the rock with a cement bit.... |

| Amie, why don't you just cut the frag off the plug instead? I know the corals encrust the plug, but if you cut it off a littl above the plug, then it can grow. Also this will give you two of that coral and you can sell the piece still attached to the plug, or even better just bring it to my house, I'm sure I can find a place that the plug will fit perfect. | I have always taken the coral off the frag so I can attach it to a natural rock of my choosing. Plugs are not meant to be a permanent base as far as I can tell. |

| But, I really suck at gluing them. Maybe at my open house you can show my how to do it better? |

It just doesn't make sense why I should have to do that. I would rather have it come to me on a small rock so I didn't have to take it off and then have to glue it to something else. I'm like Suzy...I'm terrible at glueing a frag, it almost never holds. Right now, I've got 5 plugs in my tank and I've struggled with all of them for over a year. I find them turned upside down on the rocks, in the sand, or I never find them until the coral is completely dead. So I've decided that I'm just going to dremel the foot off of the plug. It would be a lot easier to glue the flat plug to a rock than it would to glue a small coral to a rock. The sad thing is that those frags would be 2-3 times their size by now if they had come on small rocks and didn't keep falling into the sand. They really are a bad invention for the end user. I guess if I wanted to have eggcrete in my reef tank, then they would be great. |
