Are You Ready for a Party?; Anthony Calfo's coming
Topic Started: Jan 15 2010, 11:42:42 AM (148 Views)
Amie
I just asked Anthony Calfo if he'd come out to Utah to talk, and he gave me a big 'Yes, what day do you want me?' He also asked what I'd like him to talk about...awesome, huh? He knows we are a breeding group, and he can talk about all sorts of different breeding things, inverts, etc. We just need to figure out what we'd like to have him talk about. Also, Suzy mentioned maybe getting a few more speakers and making an evening of it.

How cool! This could be really fun! But, we need to look into paying for it, right? What do we have to pay for? His airfare? Do we have to pay a speaking fee?

Let me look into a few spots for having it? Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, some thoughts of where to have this:

The County Library: Most have conference rooms we can rent. We could pick a location central to most of us.

The Living Planet Aquarium: They have a conference room, but for larger meetings, they use their large open area in the front of the building.

My basement: Free! We can move the furniture out, and hold quite a few chairs. We have a sweet chair source, too! Or, if we do this in the spring, my backyard. Bring your own chair.

A public park: If we are thinking May or Juneish, this could be perfect.

Another thought:

We could do this at a local fish store. The Aquarium in Sandy has had large meetings in their building. They move out the selling racks and it holds quite a few. I do believe the owner would be very receptive to this idea, and probably be able to donate some money to the cause. But, this would rule out the donations we might get from the other stores. I do know there are quite a few other store owners upset about getting left out of other functions.

Cool but how would we have any idea of how many would come that seems the be the first question. If it turns into a bigger event then we could run out of room in a hurry but it would stick to have a big place and have a small showing.

Well, if we guesstimate by how many show up for our open house, and how many show up to the others clubs meeting, I would say around 50 at the most. Even the larger reef fest another local club did only had a small room for the speakers, so I would think any of these options would work.

As far as a small showing, I am ok with that because I know the dedicated true breeders will be there, and that is who we are trying to attract anyway, right? We are not trying to make money like other clubs do. I do not want the sleepless nights thinking what will happen when the IRS finds out I didn't pay taxes on my last $ 5,ooo buck frag fest!

Ok, Guys. Amie and I have discussed this a bit more. Right now, we could easily do this. The cost of bringing in a speaker can be offset by getting local fish stores to sponsor, and asking national aquarium hobby sponsors to donate. Seachem, MarineLand, ect, ect. But, Amie and I would be doing all the work! So, we are going to wait until fall. Our lives are really busty right now, and we do want to dedicate the time to do it right.

When we do do it, it will be a fund raiser for the Living Planet Aquarium.

That being said, we can always do more. Our MACNA membership pays part of the cost, plus the sponsorships pay. We can easily get other speakers, there are lots of people who love to get paid to talk about fish!

At this point, we have few dedicated to breeding and propagating, so hopefully, as we grow, it will be more interesting to do it.

People to think about for future reference:

Eric Borneman: Is doing a lot of research about spawning corals, and is really passionate about it. He also loves the Foo Fighters and hates ocean acidification....
Todd Gardner: My personal MO breeder. He is a curator at the Atlantis Aquarium in Baltimore. He has bred and raised a few different species of marine fish and is really smart about our hobby.
Andy Rhyne: A major player in the knowledge base of growing live food. Andy freely helps aquarists grow many things. I think he invented rotifers.....

Of course, Calfo. A brilliant man!

Any other thoughts for future reference?

Borneman would be great! I liked his book and someday I am going to work hard on coral spawns.
