Macroalgae for Nutrient Removal or Aquascaping; Or, BOTH!

Hi, Guys! I want to start a thread about the macroalgae I will have available at the Open House. Any thoughts, ideas, theories or questions?

I am planning on selling smallish frags of these, because most are slow growers and there is a demand at this time for them. I will fresh water and disinfect dip them.

Tang Candy
Let me start with my favorite all purpose algae. This dark maroon alga is the best I have seen for all around use. It grows in a turf like puff ball, can be attached in a display or floated in a refugium. It removes nitrate, phosphate and other food by-products, but it has a sweet added bonus. It grows zooplankton like crazy, and fish love it! My tangs and angels think it is candy! It is a semi slow grower, not invasive at all. Because of it's dark color and tendency to collect detritus, it is not the best display alga, but it is cool as a background.

Caulerpa Spp
I have 3 Caulerpa spp. One is C prolifera. This is one of my favorite display algae. It has a long frond and looks very seagrass like to me. C peltata has a sweet growth pattern, covering an overflow for me, and a nice lime green color. I also have a feather type Caulerpa, which could be one of many species. It has a 2 inch or so frond, very delicate, lacy texture. All of these algae are wonderful for nutrient control in a refugium, and can work wonderfully and safely with a little knowledge. Fast growers.

Sweet pipefish mama in last photo not included.

Codium Like
I call this codium like because it looks really, really similar but it is not hard to cultivate like most codiums I have tried. This one is easy peasy and would grow in a toilet! It is a great display alga. It has a very slow growth rate, and is not invasive. It's dark green color shows off other lighter corals to add depth and dimension to a display. Very low maintenence.

Botryocladia

This algae is a sweet focal point in a planted tank. Also good for nutrient removal in a refugium .Slow grower, so it is best as a maintenence algae in a refugium. But, can be very striking in a display.

Blue Ochtodes
This is one of my most commented on alga, and my most requested. It has a really bright purple color under strong lighting, grows in a low growth pattern. It grows very, very slowly so specimens will be small.

Pricing:

Caulerpa Spp: $10 each or $15 for all 3
Codium-like, Brotrycladia, Tang Candy: $15
Blue Ochtodes: $20

I really do not have a ton of these available so they are very much first come first serve. Also, my guesses at spp names are really just guesses! I am not a phytocologist, but I do play one on TV!
