I just hope they are eating. Everything I have researched about them says they eat sponge. But, the researchers are checking them in their natural habitat so maybe they are pulling out some algae in between the sponges cells?! That would be sweet if they are hermapphodites. Then 2 would be enough? |

The sea slug forum Suzy it looks like they eat blue sponges. It's not often I hear a happy story about buying nudibranchs in aquarium shops. I don't think we know anything about the breeding cycle in this species but from the minute size of the eggs in the egg ribbon we can be fairly sure the larvae will be numerous, very small, and have a relatively long free-swimmimg period in the plankton [2 weeks to 2 months?] where they will have to feed on microscopic plants in the water. Keeping veliger larvae alive in aquarium conditions is very difficult. Two major problems is having the right algal phytoplankton in the water and preventing the larvae from becoming trapped in the surface layer of the water where they die. So I don't hold our much hope for any hatching larvae, but they may be a nice food change for filter feeding animals in your aquarium I've included a couple of close-ups to show the mating and the characteristic bristles [caryophyllidia] all over the dorsum. |

If yours are the same species as the ones that Bob found, then you might be out of luck. It's possible that the coloring in yours is not as brilliant because they have not eaten for a while. Blue sponge is hard to come by and doesn't transfer from tank to tank very easily. I think MSM had some last time I was there, but I don't think they had a lot of it...maybe a 2"x2" size. I have some black sponge that you are welcome to try, but again, I don't have a lot of it. It's really easy to get out of my tank though. |

| The research I did had them feeding on white sponge but I do think color does not tell me the species they need. I do find it odd they are not cruising around on floor looking for sponge, they are always on the glass. Trying to escape? |

| It is truley a beautiful animal. It's amazing what nature has to offer. If I had any sponges to try I would give them to you. Good luck with them. |

I am not 100% sure these are obligate sponge eaters. They seem to be content on the glass, and are not really seeming to even explore the different types of sponge I put in. I would think if they wanted sponge, they would at least explore the rock and substrate. I dunno. But, watching them "procreate" (sorry, but I am loving that word today!) makes me wonder if they are not getting some energy source. Check this photo out. You can see one little hermaphrodite part (in seahorse's, this would be called an ovipositor) actually inserted into the others skin. Posted Image |

Anyone have a guess how long before the egg strand appears?

| Couple of things. I doubt they would breed if they are starving to death, unless it is a evolutionary "hail Mary" which it could be. I'm dieing so I will spend the last of my energy to try to get some offspring that can float to a better place. The next thing which I know you know is nudi's are very specialized almost without exception they eat a very particular diet. If the are on the glass all the time then they are happy and not needing to look when you are watching. Do you know that they are not nocturnal feeders. Oh I just got another idea maybe they are like some salmon or insect species, they reach a point in life where they shut down on eating and focus on breeding then die. |

Oh no. I hope not. I hope I get at least a few chances at eggs? These 2 are either on the glass, or on a piece of nuisance alga. Do you think the egg strand would come immediately after procreation (sorry, I have to use that word for one more week or The teasing will not stop while I am getting ignored!) |
