I think people have said on forums that if there is a area of no ( or very low) oxygen, you can get a build up of noxious gas in that area. But, that would be caused by bacteria decaying food, right? If there is no way for nutrients to get in ( by water moving in with available nitrate, phosphate, ect), I can't see how a bacteria could grow and thrive enough to release it's byproducts. Seems like a failed theory....

I agree with that. I would like to know how something could grow and then release it's bad properties if you have it completely closed off. I would say that that is paranoia at it's best...or worst.
