So, this is a genus I have considered really out of reach. The typical pyschedelic mandarin is a fussy, finicky fish. I have always thought attempting to get them to breed, let alone raise the fry, impossible. But, the Jan/Feb issue of Coral Magazine has an article about raising the green spot mandarin. This has led me to start looking for a pair. I have looked in every fish store in the SLC valley, and I can not find a male anywhere. So, if anyone sees a male, let me know? In the meantime, I have found a few dragonettes: the cutest little scooter blennies. I have 3 who seem compatible. We'll see if they decide to procreate! |

I haven't had them for years now. I remember after my first tank matured and was full of bugs I added one. I was my favorites! Ah the colors!...movement and thier fin displays. I don't see them that often anymore. What distinctions are you looking for between males and females? I will keep an eye out for you. I need to research them again. Good luck! I would love to hear your success in this new venture. |

The dorsal fin on the male is a lot bigger, like a flag. I can't find a good pic now but here is this: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/Mandidfaqs1.htm |

I love those little guys. I had one for years, obviously it was a female because I didn't realize that the male had that big of a dorsal fin. I haven't seen a spotted mandarin in the stores for a long time. I think you can get them from ORA tank-raised now, can't you? |

| Maybe but I thought ORA doesn't sell to the public? I have seen females at Fish4You, The Aquarium and Aquatica, but no males yet. |

| You are right, I forgot that ORA only sells to retailers. But there are so many that buy from them that you could ask them to put them on their order. Fish4U and BirdWorld both order from ORA. |

| The Fish 4 you staff will watch for a male for me, along with The Aquarium, I think. I am not as familiar with the people at Bird World. Will you watch for me when you go in there everybody? The greenspot mandarin? |

I'll watch BirdWorld. I'll talk to Doug and Kelly and see if I can get them to call me when they get them in. I can talk to Randy at MSM as well. |
