Chlorine vs. bleach; what's the difference

I was talking to a guy that grows and sells phytoplankton as a business and he said that they use pool chlorine instead of bleach to clean their vessels. I had never heard of that, but he said it was significantly cheaper. Is it the same thing?

I do think it is the same thing, but the pool chlorine comes in granules? At least, our spa clorine came that way. I have read the only way to keep it "sterile" clean is to use an acid that I can't remember the name of....

muriatic acid? What do you mean, 'to keep it sterile'? Chlorine isn't sterile? That doesn't make sense to me. That's like saying that you need to wash soap, to keep it clean..right?

No, the acid will super disinfect it, but the word "sterile" means negative pressure rooms, hooded tables and techniques we can't do at home. The best we can do is " super clean".

So chlorine doesn't super disinfect as well as bleach? And you are right, we can never have a completely sterile environment...darn it. But you are doing a good job at keeping your phyto sterile with your new techniques, right?

This culture is still completely clean! Not one contaminent last time I checked!

But, bleach is clorine. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. I think it is just a different form. Bleach is liquid, clorine can be granules.

Okay, so I guess I don't understand why muriatic acid is needed sometimes. I've heard of people using that. I used to use vinegar to dilute the bleach effects on things I had cleaned, but now I just let things sit for a few days and the bleach dissipates over time.

I don't know why people use that sometimes. Maybe because it gets in the etches in the glass? I dunno. I use full strenth bleach.
