over the last two months 15 clowns have died. they get a cottony spot on them that turns into a red infected area underneath. one or two get it every few days and within 5 or so days they are dead. I only have one picasso (which is now sick) and two snowcasso's left. I have tried several meds and nothing is working. I ordered in new fish two months ago and did not quarantine (because they were so costly) that is where my trouble all started. the tank has been set up for three years. total system 280 gals. water tests fine Ammonia-0, nitrate-0, nitrite-0 phosphate-0, PH 8.2, salinity 1.21, temp runs cold in winter time at 72. I have 2 BTA's, Xenia, and a couple of plate corals that are doing great. I use a quarantine tank to treat the sick fish, Any ideas on what to try or what you would use would be appreciated. I think I an going to give up and go back to freshwater. |

I am so sorry to hear this. The trials we go through.....Don't give up. It will pass. First, let me ask the obvious: Do you have cleaner shrimp, cleaner wrasses, ect in the main tank? This sounds very parasitic, and possibly could be wiped out with the cleaners. Second, what are you using in the hospital tank? Several meds? If this is a parasite or a fungus, which I think is the root pathogen, your fish could be susceptible to a secondary bacterial infection. I like to add Spectrogram to the hospital tank because it is broad spectrum and covers many pathogens. You might consider a freshwater dip, but I am not a big fan of that method. It seems to stress the fish, and we have to remember we are encouraging the fishes natural defenses to actually cure the fish. Are they fish still eating? You can gut load live food with medication. A much more effective way of delivery. |

A common disease that clownfish can bring into the tank if you don't quarantine them is Brooklynella, or clownfish disease. It kills the fish really fast. Fish with this disease usually display rapid breathing and act listless. Have you seen that in your fish? If so, you need to read this Surviving Brooklynellosis If you are feeding too much, clownfish can get a fungus and it would look like grayish cottony patches. If they are scratching on the rocks, like they itch, a UV sterilizer will work as well. Sorry Suzy, but I've had a lot of success with freshwater dips with absolutely no stress at all that I could see, at least. I dipped a breeding maroon pair several times 2 years ago and they are still alive and well and spawning like crazy. If you are going to try it, it's extremely important that you balance the temperature AND the ph to match the tank they are coming from, that is what will kill the fish. I set up a sterile bucket, add a heater, a small powerhead, an airline and 6-8 inches of RO. I'll test both the tank and the bucket and start adding a tsp. of baking soda to the bucket every 1/2 hour until it matches the tank. It can take up to 4 hours for me to get the ph and the temperature matched just right, it's definitely no easy task or something that you rush. Do one last test on the tank to be sure they are identical. Then I move them over and leave them there for at least an hour. I watch them carefully the entire time to make sure they are not acting like they can't breath. However, freshwater dips only work if there is something on the fish that needs to be killed like parasites, flukes or isopods. It's a waste of time if it's Brooklynella or a fungus. Here's a really good article about why it's so important to quarantine. At the bottom of the article, he says what he treats all of his fish with while he's quarantining them. So he doesn't JUST quarantine them, he assumes that they are bringing something with them and elliminates it from the beginning. An Ounce of Prevention |

| Don't be sorry. If it works for you, then recommend it! Brooklynellosis sounds wicked! I need to read the article. It must be bacterial? |

I was reading this and thinking maybe Brooklynella, with possibly a secondary hemorrhagic Septicemia infection. Have any other type of fish - other than clownfish - been affected? |
