Phytoplankton circulation

I was wondering if you can use a small pump to circulate the phytoplankton around.

Sort of pump it to the top and have it flow back down. Then you can do high volume.

Hi

I used to do it that way, if a 5 gallon carboy.

What if you did both.

A minijet 404 / 606 can move a little bit of water while we still up an airpump. I wonder if that would increase growth?

What size pump? You think nanno will survive the impeller blades?

btw how have you been?

I am well! I use the smallest, cheapest pump from Petco. The cells are very capable of traveling through the pump unharmed. Think of a very tiny cell going through a pretty large area (comparative to it's size) surrounded by water molecules. they do just fine.

I would still do it that way if I needed a large quantity. But, since I got my last culture, I do not want to take a chance on contaminating it. Using the large carboy, the culture would be exposed to air and the contaminents in the air. Ciliates, and other zooplanktons, other algae, ect. But, I could possible cover it with plastic wrap...

Or we could use large sacks like Sylvio does....

Suzy, why mess with the setup you have...it's working.

Like Suzy said, the phyto can survive the impeller because of the size difference. It's the amount of flow that is created and the strength of the cell walls that really counts. If you had a pump that was really strong, it still wouldn't split a cell in 2, but the force of the cells being thrown around the container might kill them if it's a more delicate strain of phyto.

I am loving this set up now. Easy peasy and super clean!

But, I am going to try it with a carboy later this fall, when I have a lot of baby fish....

I think Sylvio is saying pumps are too hard to clean and the culture would be contaminated too quickly. I am going to try my secret technique on it, and see what happens!
