I've got a pair of black and white occlerious clownfish who's been together for a couple of years. I got them from someone who's kept them for three / four years and I've kept them for two months now. They have a very flat vertical part of my lr that they are obsessively nipping at. Or cleaning it for some reason. The interesting part is they sleep against it too. Are they just trying to eat the copepods? Am I not feeding them enough? They haven't found my rbta yet I guess. They get flake food formula 1 for about 5 days a week once a day. One day they get enriched frozen brine, oyster eggs, selcon, cyclop-eeze, and one day a week I dose everything with coral frenzy. Every so often, I dose phyto & live rotifers and copepods (home brew) to the tank too. The bigger one, I guess the female chases my flasher wrasse when it get's to close to that spot too. Heck when I move stuff around, they nip at me if I get too close to that spot. My tank's on a aquacontroller jr so the temp stays between 76 and 79. It also controls my MH and moon light. And I run a RDP fuge light so my pH is pretty solid between 8.09 and 8.32. My top off is RO with pickling lime. The water parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 15 for nitrates. I've got a GSM 1 for a skimmer and my fuge is the same size as my DT. Tank size is 40B for DT and 55gal for Sump / Fuge. I think I've seen them do the mating dance. You know, the one that looks like they are getting shocked by 50,000 volts, lol. Thougths? Edited by sterling18, Aug 3 2010, 09:21:25 AM.

I wish you luck with those fish Peter. Are you ready for the babies? I think Amie knows all the tricks on raising them. You are a smart guy but I think if you have any questions talk with her. I never could get my black and whites to breed but they were not black and white Ocellarius Clownfish. I think mine were black and white saddlebacks with a yellow beak (Amphiprion polymnus). I have also seen black and white Clark's clownfish with a yellow beak but they also have a yellow tail. Mine had a black tail with a white rim. I love clownfish, I think it is strange how they become female. There are so many different kinds or species. Does any one know how many? I think I once read 28 species, but I think there has to be more than that. Have any of the species been cross bred? Edited by Larry H, Aug 3 2010, 09:03:43 PM.

Yep, they are getting ready to lay eggs. You should watch the female to see if she is showing sign of 'fatness', or gravid, as they call it in the fish world. Why they can't call it being pregnant, I'll never know. Your temperature is a little low so it's possible they will never lay the eggs, or the eggs won't survive. If you want to start raising baby O's, slowly get your temp. up to 82, at least. |

I would love to try raising them! Pick me, pick me! Amie, she is not "gravid" technically, until the eggs are fertilized, right? Same with "pregnant". Larry, there is a cool article in Coral Mag about "Designer" clownfish. Lots of culling and mixing of species to get many "new" species. The names are funny! I guess there could be issues but isn't that how we got beagles from wolves? These fish can never go back in the ocean but my cocker spaniels would never survive in the wild, either.... |

I know that there are many species and that probably had to be done first in the wild, unlike wolves to dogs which mankind had a major part. But I guess my question would be, would the cross bred species then become a species of their own someday? Like so many species we have tried to cross breed and I am not just talking fish, many of those can not produce offspring. An example would be the donkey and the horse. Another example I had when I was younger was with fresh water guppies and mosquito fish. I am sorry Peter, I was not trying to steal your thread, but was just curious to cross breeding the more productive species of clown fish with a species less productive to get something different. |
