Amie, she is not "gravid" technically, until the eggs are fertilized, right? Same with "pregnant".

Gravid just means that she's carrying eggs. I don't think a fish ever carries fertilized eggs...well, that's not entirely true. I don't think you would say that a banggai cardinal is gravid when he is carrying eggs in his mouth, but I do know that you call the female gravid when she is carrying eggs. I don't know what you do about seahorses. Is the female gravid? Or the male?

I don't know of any livebearing fish that are marine fish. I know that someone will come up with one. But those freshwater fish like guppies carry fertilized eggs.

Well, I guess in syngnathids (seahorses and pipes) the female is "gravid" when she has the unfertilized eggs, and the male is "pregnant" when he gets the eggs in his pouch and fertilizes them! But, this means I am gravid now! I have eggs still!

I think the true meaning (Latin?) might be changed for fish, different than for humans? In all the gyno MDs histories about their patients, they write Gravida 4, (or whatever number) to indicate how many pregnancies a woman has had. There is another word (para something) that indicates how many were successful (I think! I don't know nothing about birthin' no babies!).

If someone asks me if I'm gravid or not, they better be standing within punching distance when they ask, that's all I've got to say.

Actually, Rob teases me about it. One day I was talking about my brine shrimp cysts and I told him I was afraid my eggs were getting old. He replied "That's Ok, honey, I love you anyway".

I did slug him.
